Call for submissions to 'The Third Degree' (a newspaper by students in Uppity Witches!)
(The Third Degree creators, Nini, Sophia, and Finn)
Uppity Witches is a class launched by the Advice Project that looks at witches and witch hunts through the ages to examine gender and social issues, feminism, religion, pop culture, and patriarchy. Currently in its fifth semester, students discuss stereotypes and tropes in fairytales and media, and they develop written projects to further examine the issues.
This semester's students have decided to start a newspaper called The Third Degree, and we're very happy to announce that young writers between 11 to 18 from around the world are now invited to submit articles for the first issue of the paper, which will be published mid-December. We'll also publish articles online so that stories can be read anywhere that has Internet connectivity.
Interested in submitting to The Third Degree? Please follow the guidelines below:
ORIGINAL ARTICLES AND MULTIMEDIA SUBMISSIONS
Please send your submission to uppitywitches [at] gmail [dot] com in a .doc file - as well as copied into the body of your email. Include your name, contact information, a brief (one to two-line) biography, and a headshot photo if you would like that included (we add small photos to most published pieces).
The subject line of your email should begin with "SUBMISSION:" followed by your name and the article title.
All submissions are subject to a review process by all of the current students in the Uppity Witches class, and proofing and a possible headline change may occur. Writers will be contacted if major editing is required, and then we'll go from there. Submissions aren't expected to be perfect, but we do expect that you give them your best shot!
For the first print, we'll need submissions no later than November 26th, but the sooner we receive work, the better, as we'll have limited space for articles in our printed version of the paper!
If these submissions guidelines are confusing at all, please contact us so that we can help walk you through!
LENGTH
For writers not previously published by Advice Project Media, we suggest opinion submissions be limited to 750 words and news stories to be no more than 1,500 words. For now, stories longer than 1,500 words will be reserved for current or past students of the Advice Project's Uppity Witches classes. Please send final drafts only! We only have a couple editors who can assist with editing, and revisions are time-consuming.
In addition to articles and videos, we're also looking for:
Witchy jokes and satire pieces
A crossword puzzle
Horoscope
Comics
Photos
Witchy advice or romance column (with a feminist twist!)
Art
"Missed Connections"
Ads (should be funny, witchy, AND educational!)
All submissions should (in one way or another) involve at least one of the following issues:
ISSUES
The Third Degree is all about uncovering things that are often hidden from sight... For example:
Why are so many fairytale mothers killed off? (Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, the Little Mermaid...)
Tropes: Why are so many witches "ugly", and so many princesses "beautiful"? Why do most wizards have beards and why are most heroes so "handsome" and physically strong? Read/see a student example, here.
Sports - Are there differences in how peoples of different genders are treated in sports (think of some witchy examples!)
Hermione Granger, Harry Potter, and the wage gap -- have actors who played characters in Harry Potter been paid according to their genders? Read a student example, here.
Who gets "third degree" treatment in contemporary politics?
What is the third degree (give examples)?
What the heck does patriarchy have to do with witches?
Can boys be witches?
Do witches exist?
Examples of witch hunts?
While articles and videos don't need to directly involve witches, they should include at least one of the following issues:
Witch hunts
Tropes in video games, TV, movies, books, advertising, and fairytales
Otherness
Patriarchy & systems
The ways we look at the world
Stereotypes
Gender roles
Politics
